When it encounters water, it undergoes a transformation into calcium hydroxide (lime, Ca(OH)2), playing a significant role in the precise management of clay hydration and dispersion in drilling fluids. This vital transformation ensures that clay is kept in a carefully controlled state of moderate flocculation. Moreover, Hot Lime stands as a primary source of calcium and alkalinity, ideally suited for a wide range of rigorous drilling conditions, especially in oil-based muds.
In situations exposed to wetness or rainfall, calcium hydroxide is favored over Hot Lime to prevent undesirable chemical reactions. The exothermic reaction of Hot Lime with water is a key factor in the creation of stable emulsions, offering significant advantages in conventional oil mud systems. This reaction with emulsifiers produces calcium soaps, thereby maintaining essential alkalinity in challenging drilling environments confronted with acid gases like carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide.
